There are a number of complex closely guarded formula’s and algorhythms Google utilizes to rate then rank websites. No-one knows exactly how Google does this but the following 4 on-page and off-page factors are widely accepted as being critical factors in how your website or webpages rank in the search engines and what you can do to help your site get on top of first page of Google
Keywords
The most effective way to get your site ranking higher in Google is to “localise” your website and determine your major keywords from the outset.
For example if you are a florist in Surry Hills and If we searched Google typing in “Florist” it is very unlikely your business will appear on the first page due to the competitive nature of the search. However if we localise the search and type in “Florist Surry Hills or Surry Hills Florist” you would have a much better chance of being on the front page of Google.
This can be achieved by using the keyword Surry Hills throughout your site many times so it has a “high relevance”. So decide your keywords early on, and make sure your content is unique and contains a high number of your keywords scattered through out the website. WorkHorse WebPages can assist you with keyword research, we can find those keywords relevant to your business that will also bring traffic to your site and help you get on the first page of Google
Page Titles & Headers
Another important factor is titles and headers through your website. More importance is placed on these things then general content so make sure you are using your keywords effectively throughout your site, not just placing them anywhere (keyword stuffing) . Naming your homepage “homepage” will give you absolutely no benefits. Calling it “Jan’s Flowers-Surry Hills Florist” would be much more beneficial.
Content
Content is King! It is almost the single-handedly most important aspect to your site rank in Google. To obtain a high ranking it is critical that you use your keywords constantly throughout your site. The “freshness” of your content is important as well. For example, if you are continually adding information to your site (such as an article, whitepaper current content) Google see’s that every time it crawls the page there is more new information, and it is likely to continue crawling your site regularly.
If your website content has not changed since the crawler last checked your site then it is likely to not crawl it again for a longer period which can reduce your ranking as a competitor may have been constantly adding new content to their site. If you are not sure about how or what type of content you need, we are more than happy to offer suggestion or create relevent content for you.

Links
If content isn’t the most important aspect of ranking then linking most certainly is! Internal links play their part but outside links from other websites pointing to your site are what you need. For example, if a high ranked website has a link on their site to yours then Google instantly respects your site more, by seeing lots of relevant sites linking to yours Google sees you as an “Authority Site” and in turn gives you higher rankings
How do you do this? Well if you are constantly adding good and interesting content you may not have to do anything, fellow web users will do this for you! In today’s social media age there are many various ways or re-posting interesting content via Facebook and Twitter to name a couple. Other then that you can actively pursue websites and ask for them to link to you, however to gain a higher ranking the website must be in a related field and not some random website.
